may not be aware of it, but there is a thriving youth bridge program
here in the city. It meets Sunday afternoons at our upper East Side
Cavendish Bridge Club. For over seven years, one of our fellow bridge
enthusiasts, Barbara McLendon, has led a team of dedicated volunteers
building a junior program from scratch into what it is today. Kerry
Kappell directs the duplicate game, Ellen Friedman teaches all the
newest students from nine and ten year olds to teenagers. Yoshiko
Prager and Martin Stahl complete the team.
This is a fun, competitive group. The afternoon duplicate game
awards master points and runs to seven tables. Several of the children
even went to Nationals this year.
This is great news. If you
were ever thinking of a way of getting your children or
grandchildren interested and involved in our fantastic game, know that
this is as good a program as it gets. It is lively and fun.
The kids are engaged and they get great instruction and pizza
every session. And it is free, thanks in part to continuing
grants from our Greater New York Bridge Association (GNYBA)
and from the ACBL's National Education Foundation.
